The Functions of Nigerian Police
The police force is vested with numerous functions of both primary and secondary in nature as a matter of fact, they are constitutionally charged with the following provided duties namely:
i. Prevention detection of crime.
ii. The apprehension of the offenders.
iii. The preservation of law and orders.
iv. The protection of life and property.
v. Due enforcement of law and regulations
vi. Performance of military duties within or without Nigeria
There has been a debate on whether the police duties and powers are exercisable independent of others. Amadi observed that the duties and powers of the police are complimentary of each other and fused. The police powers and duties are exercisable in symbiotic action. Thus, when a police officer exercises his power, he is said to be doing his duties.
