Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) is the pioneer and leader of the petroleum industry in Nigeria. It has the largest acreage in the country from which it produces some 43 per cent of the nation’s oil. The company’s operations are concentrated in the Niger Delta and adjoining shallow offshore areas where it operates in an oil mining lease area of around 31,000 square kilometres.
SPDC is currently involved in a multi-million dollar oil and gas project in the Niger Delta region with the objective of increasing production to help meet the world’s growing demand for energy.
We’re currently looking to recruit two Land Acquisition and Claims Advisers for our Warri and PortHarcourt Offices.

Location: Warri, Port Harcourt, Nigeria
Responsibilities:
-A minimum of 5 years relevant working experience· Must possess Bachelors in Estate Management (Minimum of Second Class Lower division) and be an Associate of the Nigerian Institute of Valuers and Surveyors. A Post Graduate Degree in Environmental Sciences/Management will be an added advantage.
-Demonstrated ability to be creative, analytical, imaginative with a high level of high integrity to the discharge of duties.
-Must be an excellent team player possessing good Leadership, multidisciplinary team and networking skills and the capacity to tolerate a high-pressure work environment.
-Good understanding of the challenges of the physical environment of the Niger Delta Region.
-Excellent understanding of relevant Laws, policies and Practices governing Compensation in Nigeria.
Requirements:
In this position you will supervise the acquisition of and payment for all parcels of land and their associated claims as may be required for company operations in a timely and cost-effective manner while meeting project targets / schedules and ensuring prompt resolution of incidental potential and actual disputes arising there with a view to avoiding disruptions to company operations and improving relations with its host communities.
- Develop and implement a land acquisition and claims management strategy (including compensation systems) for the company.
- Manage the relationships with host communities, company’s legal team and external third party attorneys to ensure timely and peaceful resolution of claims.
- Determine legitimate landowners / claimants and their bonafide representatives given the diverse customary land tenures systems and fractionalisation of the community’s / family’s hierarchies.
- Identify and manage potential and actual inter/intra communal disputes that may militate against prompt land acquisitions.
- Identify landowners / claimants and maintain contacts with relevant stakeholders including Government Agencies, Community opinion Leaders, Claims Agents, NGOs, etc.
- Carry out pre-reconnaissance site visits in order to obtain preliminary information for planning mobilisation to site / location for field verification / assessment exercises
- Mobilise Consultants (where necessary) and supervise the conduct of the field verification / assessment and ensure compliance with all company HSE policies and regulations.
- Conduct negotiations with landowners / claimants in an open and transparent manner and within approved company mandate while ensuring prompt payment and avoiding disputes and litigations.
- Contribute to the development of strategies for pre-empting and resolving conflicts / litigations on land and claims compensation payment matters in order to reduce the Company’s contingent liability.
- Provide support to Legal department on litigations related to payment of compensation for land and claims.
