Yar’Adua suspends NNPC board appointments

Published: Tuesday, 3 Feb 2009
Indications emerged on Monday that President Umaru Yar’Adua has directed the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr. Rilwan Lukman, to stay action on fresh appointments to the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
Consequently, Yar’Adua has ordered Lukman to suspend the planned appointment of new hands as executive directors for the seven directorates of the NNPC and managing directors of the 11 subsidiaries of the corporation.
Investigation revealed that Yar’Adua, who is currently on vacation, dispatched the order to Lukman through the Vice- President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
Findings by our correspondent showed that Lukman had planned to appoint four northerners, one person from the South West, one indigene of the South East and another person from the South South into the seven-man directorate of NNPC.
Our source further disclosed that the new executive directors and the fresh hands to man the strategic business units of NNPC would have been made public last week.
Investigations by our correspondent in NNPC on Monday, showed that the presidential order was sequel to a public outcry, especially from the South South geopolitical zone, against the recent appointments made by Yar’Adua in the oil sector.
A reliable source in NNPC told our correspondent that Yar’Adua was embarrassed by the accusation levelled against him by the leaders of the South South that he was pursuing a northern agenda in the oil sector.
It was learnt that Yar’Adua was seeking to ensure that subsequent appointments in the sector were in consonance with the principles of federal character as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution and in conformity with the doctrine of due process adopted by his administration.
The South South Leaders and Elders Forum, led by Chief Edwin Clark, had protested the appointment into key positions in the sector, particularly, that of Lukman and the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Alhaji Mohammed Barkindo, who come principally from the northern part of the country.
The South South leaders alleged that the zone was being excluded and marginalised in the management of the nation’s oil resources, adding that the appointments were lopsided in favour of the North.
Already, the South South Forum had slammed a legal suit against Yar’Adua, apparently to compel him to accommodate the interest of the zone when making fresh appointments in the sector.
However, a reliable source in NNPC in Warri, told our correspondent on Monday, that Yar’Adua had ordered Lukman to suspend fresh appointments in the public oil sector until further notice.
