In reply to your mail, a cover letter or note can simply be explained as a note served as a reply to a request e.g U are sending a docs to somebody, what you need to do is to write a short note to the person you are sending the docs to so as to know what U are sending to him/her.

For an application letter which comprises of so many things such as application letter to seek for employment, for security post, clerical post etc. and by writing an application letter you need to give a short description of yourself, ur educational background, and ur experiences in ur previous work fields before reverting them to ur c.v.
I think with this little explanation you will grab something.

Actually there is no much difference but for the sake of English language there is a huge difference btw d two.PLEASE NEVER SAY THERE IS NONE else u fail(if is an examination)

I think Kanutango above has made a very good contribution as it concerns cover letter.
A cover letter, put simply helps you to list out all the attributes that makes you suitable for a particular job opening. Since there maybe lots of application a well written cover letter sets you apart from the rest. Put differently, a cover letter helps you to blow your trumpet by way of highlighting all those attributes that makes you most suitable for a specific job. Hope this will help.
