    UK Degrees are worthless

Leading British entrepreneur Simon Dolan: Degrees are worthless

A British entrepreneur worth more than £100m has said that degrees are “worthless” and that many university courses available across the UK are “ridiculous”.

Self-made multimillionaire Simon Dolan left school at the age of 16 and went on to form a business empire which now turns over close to £100m a year, putting him 703rd on the Sunday Times Rich List.

Known for taking risky business ventures, Dolan became recognised as the world’s first “Twitter Dragon” after investing more than £5m of his own money on business pitches composed of no more than 140 characters.

Managing a staff of more than 200 people, he told Yahoo! Finance that “younger, brighter candidates are much more employable” than university graduates.

“No matter what the government say we know that the current system doesn’t work,” he said. “As an employer myself I know a degree is worthless, every other employer I speak to says the same in the main part. University is not the issue of whether you had a good time or not it is the whether you will be employable at the end of it.

“Graduates come out with a self-right to not have to flip burgers even if it is the only job they can get.

"Schools need to educate children to become fully rounded human beings and not make them just pass exams so they can get to university.

"I think a far larger part needs to be taken with how to be useful in an office or work environment."

Dolan’s autobiographical guide book ‘How to make millions without a degree’ has divided opinion but with more than 1.04m young people out of work and thousands more being priced out of university it touches on one of the burning issues of the day. Amid huge opposition to the increase of tuition fees this summer he said that the rise is a “really good idea” as it will overhaul “ridiculous” degrees on offer.

“Formerly university was the place for talented people to go to get higher education for later life,” Mr Dolan said. “It typically wasn’t the place where everyone went…everyone can’t be the most intelligent in society."

A Department for Business, Innovation and Skills spokesperson said: "A degree remains a good investment in the long term and is one of the best pathways to achieving a good job and rewarding career.

its funny how the initiator of this post thought to make it a referendum on uk schools..he meant his argument generally from what i gather.. but all the same, good perspective. I guess we should all ask our children not to go to school now. I m sure the rich man himself must have specifically prevented his kids from going to school!

For me; What u don't know is enough 2 put u in trouble. Eistein says : The mind dt opens 2 a new idea never comes back 2 its original size. For me again; The depth of ur understanding is d determing factor in how far u can go... What matters is UNDERSTANDING.

    Re: UK Degrees are worthless

Ignorance is again on display here. How can someone change the context of the news to mean UK Degrees? The way people respond to topics on this forum shows that some Nigerian graduates are really half baked. The man was making a genral statement. Simon Dolan said and I quote:

“No matter what the government say we know that the current system doesn’t work,” he said. “As an employer myself I know a degree is worthless, every other employer I speak to says the same in the main part. University is not the issue of whether you had a good time or not it is the whether you will be employable at the end of it.

“Graduates come out with a self-right to not have to flip burgers even if it is the only job they can get.

"Schools need to educate children to become fully rounded human beings and not make them just pass exams so they can get to university.

    "I
think a far larger part needs to be taken with how to be useful in an office or work environment."

What the man is saying in essence is that the school curriculum does not have any link with the working environment and so the curriculm should be tailored to suite the working environment and life in the society as well. Professor Charles Soludo once said that some Nigerian graduates are not employable. This is almost the same thing the man is saying here.

He is also saying that going to the University is not a guarantee that you are employable; which means if you don't study and come out with a good grade and knowledge of your course to back up then your going to the University is worthless.

These days we see some Nigerian graduates not being able to write a good formal letter. In my NYSC camp one girl could not spell the name of her school as we were filling the Year book. Can you imagine! These are the type of people that this man is saying that their University degree is worthless.

He is not discouraging anyone from getting a degree.

IF YOU THINK EDUCATION IS EXPENSIVE, THEN TRY IGNORANCE.

The poster sounds more like someone who is desirous of a UK degree but wasn't opportuned to have it cos how on earth could u confine the argument to UK universities. Well whether u like it or not some degrees aint on the same level. Its not all about possessing a degree certificate rather it centers around you sharpening your mind. I am 100% sure Simon Dolan's CEO is a graduate with intimidating qualification.

Sorry to dissapoint you last poster already have a degree just brought this post up to let us know that the situation is not just peculiar to Nigeria alone. The last time a post came up about "Nigerian University degrees being worthless", we were shock shyed and felt Nigeria is the only country on planet earth facing such a predicament. The bottom line here is "it is no longer the certificate that matters but how proficient you become at the end of the day" so while millions keep spending outrageous sums to come study in the UK, i think it is high time we developed our inherent talents more because that is what matters most and let me remind us all this talents abound in Nigeria my country we just need to figure how to put them to much more profitable use. Cheers one Luv my beloveth country folks.
