I don't think they will allow you defer. However, things might be different this year since they are already way behind schedule as some schools will soon be resuming. But remember that the essence of the award is for Mobil and NNPC to say they have used the federal money to send 10 people to further their studies in some of the world's best universities.

As per if Mobil recruits their scholars, you would be given some statistics of 'return ratio' during the award ceremony, but will also be told you are not bound to work with them neither are they under any obligation to employ you. Finally with regards to the interviews. Let me first congratulate those called. Give it your best shot. A friend of mine said he would use the exposure and education to enter Nigerian politics and make the best use of our resources....and he got the award! Also, be ready to describe ur undegraduate project succinctly to engineers and HR personnel (not too technical but also showing engineering research ability). To emphasize Triple-C, if your first degree is different from your intended second degree, be ready with a very good reason why you changed.

But I still need confirmation on whether the scholarship can be deferred. I ask cos it's not only too late as schools are resuming this september, but also because visa application is not going to take less than 6 weeks for the school I have applied to. Of course, I wont make this case during the interview. I'll only request it after receiving the scholarship. Dynamo1, do you think this can work?

ESSO/NNPC intl pg scholarship has always been 10....maybe they will increase the number is later years. but for now, they are content with giving just 10 people the opportunity. So strive to be part of the 10 :)

Congrats on being called. It ain't over yet. As Triple-C stated, get the scholarship first and you'll cross that bridge when you get there. There are unusual circumstances surrounding this year's award. During the award's ceremony, you all will be able to raise the issue on open grounds (I'm almost certain all 10 awardees will be in the same fix. It will even be more critical for US awardees since almost all US schools resume before September).

In any case, you guys can raise the point that Mobil (or NNPC) should help get proprietary clearance for speedy visa application, or allow you defer for a year. There will be strength in numbers since most, if not all, will be in the same shoes.

But, get the award first..... :)

With due respect my Boss, from my unpopular essays prior to 30th August, 2012 on Facility Engineering threads; I (iOS) did posted antidotes on the expected questions as a safeguard. But now an open questions only for interviewee to put "QUESTION TAGS" to finding the "ANSWERS" in a key conversational speech or essay!
