Newcastle University PTDF Scholars
Hi Guys,
Just thought it would be ok to start this blog with a view of keeping the New PTDF scholars that will be arriving Newcastle in September 2012, abreast with recent happenings and possibly answer as many questions as i possibly can since i am almost rounding up my M.Sc now. NAIJA is the best cheers guys and once more congratulations.
Re: Newcastle University PTDF Scholars
@samugim dats gr8t, jst curious sha, am one of the lot who applied to newcastle and am given conditional offer on d basis of language requirement bt i hv dat in my GCE and am suppose to make deposit of part of my tuition fee or provide proof of official sponsorship letter b4 june,30 and ofcos u knw ptdf do call for induction by july or august, though i hv E-mail d admission team jst nw, bt ur kind advice would b welcomed, congrats and wish u suxes in ur future endevours as u round up ur programme.
Re: Newcastle University PTDF Scholars
Sam i hve conditional offer also frm newcastle....ive uploaded d notification letter frm ptdf on their site...dont know if dat would suffice....nd pls can u gve me info on their offshore engineering.....wat r d prospects like in terms of industrial connections?thks 4 ur concern.....
Re: Newcastle University PTDF Scholars
@dynasty4u Good to know u achieved the required grade @ GCE, It would therefore have been most appropriate to use ur GCE certificate in applying however i guess scanning and forwarding it to the Admissions team should take care of that for now. Also you need to be aware of the fact that irrespective of the fact that you may have satisfied this condition you will be required to write a language certification exams to prove that you actually meet the schools standard when you arrive if you don't pass no cause for alarm you will be enrolled in a program to assist your listening and writing skills @ no extra cost. Never worry most Nigerians pass the test 1st time. As for the tuition fee just attach the list that confirms you as a PTDF scholar and Email the team that you are a ptdf scholar, dats what i did and it worked like Magic they have a good relationship with PTDF. Finally when coming endeavour to come with your anti-malaria drugs and any other drugs that may help you stay healthy as their health system is not very consistent in the UK. Cheers
Re: Newcastle University PTDF Scholars
Yeah with respects to your field offshore engineering my friend in the same discipline here has been complaining that they just started the area in Newcastle so industrial connections are very slim. Besides the nature of lectures is not yet fully organized this might improve when you come around but i will suggest if you really need industrial connections that you look up Cranfield or other Universities that have been in the business for some time use the university course ranking table to check that. The notification later u uploaded should do fine.Cheers
Re: Newcastle University PTDF Scholars
@samugim thnx 4 ur kind responce, i hv jst exactly dsame. Pls wat do u think abt newcastle and imperial college 'environmental eng'g' interms of course module, connectn to industry, nd course ranking in d uk system.
Re: Newcastle University PTDF Scholars
U r really blessed sam.......i also have cranfield admission too.....just wanted to know what newcastles own was like frm d real source nd not speculated guesses ive been gettin all diz while.....
Re: Newcastle University PTDF Scholars
@ sallymos, hope you are now convinced
Re: Newcastle University PTDF Scholars
There is no question about that @ dynasty4u if you got an offer in imperial it will definitely boost your options more. But beware if you are still thinking of applying at the moment there admissions are usually pretty competitive so make your choice in good time.cheers
Re: Newcastle University PTDF Scholars
K then, @samugim i hv applied to imperial long ago, jst waiting 2 hear 4rm dem any moment 4rm nw. Bt wats it wit newcastle cos dey replied me dat dey cant change my offer status to 'unconditional' as naija is nt on UKBA list of countries to be exempted 4 language requirement. And finally can one apply 4 accomodation wit d offer stil conditional?

Alright @dynasty4u i think finally i can proffer a more effective solution. All you need to do now is get a signed and stamped letter from the Head of department where you did your undergrads attesting to the fact that your undergraduate studies was completed in an institution that uses English language as its major means of communication. Forward this alongside your other credentials to them i beliv that should sort you out, personally i remember i did same last year. With respects to accommodation i will say go ahead and apply now for the earlier the better. Remember as a scholar they will eventually sort things out but you need to move quickly.

Saw this thread and i knew at once it will benefit our new comers guys utilize the opportunity if you have space!
Important Information for PTDF Overseas scholars
If you are coming to the UK in September, then this news is for you. I know PTDF tries as much as possible to make allowance and maintenance payment to you. However, if you have some other plans running, this might not be fully adequate for you. I am talking from my experience as a former PTDF scholar at the university of Manchester. There is an easy way to earn some extra pounds between £15-£25 per hour no matter any part of UK where you are located. It is based on how much time you can spare in weekends as it is flexible. All you need is to be able to teach Maths , Physics , Chemistry and any other subject at the GCSE or A-levels. Check the sylabi on
www.aqa.org.uk ,
www.ocr.org.uk ,
www.edexcel.com. This is somewhere between SSCE, UTME and university first year in Nigeria. All you need is to go to this website and register for free so that prospective students in the UK who need private tuition can contact you by the time you arrive in September onward.

If you know the town your university is located, put the town under address and ignore specific address details except you know the specific address. If you are not sure of which town , then put any speculative town that you think you might be eventually as you can always update your details later. This is a good opportunity for you and it is my own little contributory secret to your smooth sail in the UK. I was already making about double PTDF maintenance even as a student while still having enough time for my studies.
Cheers
Yemmin

Hi guys this is the outcome of my meeting with the Environmental Engineering Academic secretary hope it helps.

Hi Samuel
I have been in touch with Kirstie in PG Admissions about the query you raised re English Language qualifications for Nigerian applicants.
She has advised that the policy keeps changing but currently if the applicant can provide evidence of having been taught and assessed in English then the Admissions team may be able to waive the language condition. The applicant would need to have completed their bachelor degree within two years of starting the course at Newcastle though. Admissions can accept a letter from the Nigerian university or a transcript which states they were taught and assessed in English.
Hope this is of some help but if you have any other queries please get in touch.

Hi Dynasty4u sorry 4 the delay was a bit busy yes as with regards accommodation for those of you wishing to stay very close to school i will advise you go for Leazes Terrace which has got all you need as a student and is withing walking distance of the department. Just go for medium En suite that will address your needs. cheers
