How to Pass a Phone Interview
Learning how to pass a phone interview is an important career-building skill. Especially in this economy, every job interview counts - and more and more employers are doing phone interviews so that nobody needs to bear travel and food expenses of a physics interview. Phone interviews require a slightly different set of interview skills than face-to-face interviews. Here is a beginner's guide to phone interview techniques that will help you have a successful job interview.
TECHNIQUES
1. Smile. Just because you're not in front of your interviewer doesn't mean that they can't tell if you're upset. Physically smiling automatically makes your voice brighter and helps you feel more chirpy. This will help you come across as an enthusiastic employee.
2. Consider dressing up anyway. Sure, one of the perks of the phone interview is that you don't need to get all spruced up - but when you look like a million bucks, you usually feel like a million bucks. Dressing up might give you an added boost of confidence.
3. Prepare some answers to common phone interview questions. It's easy to ramble on and on even in a regular job interview; you are challenged even more in a phone interview because you have no idea how your interviewer is reacting to your story. Having prepared answers for these questions, or at least certain important points you want to make, is an important job interview skill.
4. Have the website for whatever company or organization that you're interviewing at up on your internet browser. Take advantage of the fact that your interviewer can't see you - if they ask you something or you suddenly need to come up with a question for them, the website will give you plenty of ideas. Just don't type so loudly that they can hear it!
5. Take the time to highlight parts of your resume or accomplishments that fit with the company's mission. Especially in this economy, every little bit helps - and showing the company that you care enough to show them why you fit in might just do the trick

6. Before the phone interview, make sure that you get enough sleep. This goes for any kind of interview. The more rested you are, the better you will perform during the phone screen.
7. Make sure that you are in a quiet place with little or no distraction. This will help you concentrate on the questions that occur during the phone interview.
8. Be prepared for behavioral questions about your past. These interview questions should be answered in a STAR format (Situation Task, Action, Result). Breaking your past experiences down this way will help your interviewer understand your work behavior better even without any knowledge of your previous industry.
9. Know the job that you are applying for. This will help you pass the phone interview because it shows initiative. If you have some knowledge of the job, company, and industry, it will impress your interviewer.
10. Be prepared to answer some technical questions if need be. Brush up on your technical knowledge before the interview. This could help you if the person doing the phone screen throws a curve ball.
11. Remain calm. You aren't going to answer every question exactly the way they want. Don't lose your cool, if you don't, it will cost you the interview immediately.
