And come to think of it, all banks usually have far more branches in lagos and the southwest than in any other region. You only need to check the branch list of any bank, which you can get on their website to appreciate this. But still, this does not affect their selection process. A bank would never drop a first class material because he had his interview in a populated region. I no get first class o.

Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
@234, my sch mate dat did d coca cola test wit me wasnt kald again! He had 1st class in Industrial Chemistry. He was surprisd dat i reachd d final stage at coca cola leventis buildn. Nw d guy is workn wit civil defence afta searchn 4 many jobs and cudnt get any. And also getn 1st class or 2.1 doesnt mean dat sum1 is truly d best. A guy with 2.1 in english was disgracd by a police commissioner becus he was askd to spell CONCERN and he cudnt. Union may use any criteria to select ppl. Hvn 1st class and nt being able to express urself b4 any intaviewer doesn take d pesn anywhere.
-
@musco. A first class would not help you at the aptitude test stage but it will surely help you at interviews. When I had my interview with union bank, the head of the assessment team, a woman, told us that no one knew what they were looking for. A candidate in my group said they were looking for leadership skills, and the woman told us live that they were not looking for any leadership skills. She said they were the only ones who knew the criteria they were using to score us.

Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
@234, d 2.1 guy dat was disgracd attended police intaview. 2.1 in english yet he kant spel CONCERN. I TINK WAT WE DO NW IS TO PRAY TO GOD 4 US TO B AMONG D SELECTED. LETS 4GET HW THEY DO IT OR NT. IF D JOB IS URS,IT MUST COME 2U BY GODS GRACE.
-
Yes musco. They are the only ones who know what they are looking for. That was what we were told live after our group discussion. So lets wait patiently for the feedback, which we all hope will be positive. I dont even think anyone can predict when they will get back to us with any measure of certainity.
-
Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
@234, yea. Ur ryt. Lets kip bn positive. God wil c us thru.
-
Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
@Musco n 234GT: una two get plenty plenty strength ooo. C as una serious dey discuss criteria.lol. Wetin I knw b say dis na our(NHJobbers) turn to shine!!!
-
Machini, dont worry. ESPN will soon sign musco and i as analysts.
-
Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
@Musco. I'm surprised to hear dat a first class graduate joined civil defence wen he couldn't secure a job bcos in my sch dey always retain them as graduate assistant, even d guy dat made 1st class in my class immediately got employed by d dept as GA after his nysc. Why is his own different? And jst like 234gt said, 1st class result might not help at aptitude test stage but it does surely help during interviews. I respect 1st class graduates cos is not easy, if it were dat easy, y didn't I get it?
-
Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
i dnt disrespect them o o. Bt we kan stil beat them at apt tests and interviews. Lol

Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
Just came across this 1st class discussion and from experience in HR most companies are not really interested in 1st class students cos you realize majority of them are Very gud at pouring down what they study but never really take the time to try implementing it hence they are more of books and less practice. If its to impart said knowledge in others they can but usually can't practice it. Ever wonder why most 1st class students don't have really interesting social lifes in skool?? And once you can't relate socially you function in today's business environment. Except in fields like maths where the study is mostly practical do you find companies willing to accept 1st class. Just like I know someone who could cram an entire chapter of a text book but couldn't explain it. She finished with a 2.1 but you know the rest....

I beg to disagree.I don't know what facts you have to back up the above assertions. I don't want to say it's sour grapes but your argument is fundamentally flawed.First you say that HR departments in companies don't show any interest in people with 1st class.
Do you mind telling us how many HR managers who told you it's company policy not to hire 1st class graduates? Did they tell you that they'd rather go for thirds? If learning by rote(cramming) were the sole route to a 1st and if cramming were easy in itself, why doesn't everyone have a 1st class?
How can you even say that 1st class graduates don't have fairly functional social lives? The fact that you didn't come up on their social radar doesn't mean they live in solitude. They worked harder, cut back on unproductive relationships and put energies into things they loved. Is that what antisocial means to you? Truth is we can embellish stories of people who can't 'defend' the grades they have,it make us feel better about ourselves. We must also realize that most people with outstanding results were diligent, focused and socially confident.

True talk bandersnatch....

Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
@bandasnatch well said,i luv ur comment............
-
Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
@bandersnatch splendid argument but when you find urself in HR you would understand and appreciate more my arguments. Companies would rather go for those with 2nd class. I don't have any personal grudge against 1st class students infact I admire them but the fact remains that organisations these days prefer someone who would rather go partying than sit indoors all in the name of "worked harder, cut back on unproductive relationships and put energies into things they loved" what you love will not put profit in the organisations pocket. And if you must know I was a part of their inner circle and can categorically tell you that 3/4 of 1st class students fall into the categories of not being able to express their feelings, being afraid of failure, they mostly feel out of place among social gathering and are afraid to try out new things all these do not make them anti-social as they have their own social lives but also does not mean they have fully functional social lives.
And yes half 1st class students cram like never before its their gift.
Finally only a self righteous self deceiving person would make themselves feel gud cos the other person can't defend their grades cos truth be told whether they can or cannot does not give you a job or put money in ur pocket.

Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
@all just got this from a friend who works at union bank although his word is not authority but somefin to reflect on. Union bank is trying to reposition itself to be able to compete favourably with other top banks in Nigeria dats why the mass recruitment. They have a new investor most likely Citi group. Also the mass recruitment is taking a lot of people at all levels not just graduate trainee even experienced staff from other banks. Finally 2 years ago when they recruited all those who passed the exams were taken. So let's just be hopeful and wait for them.

Are you kidding me? What company would prefer that? Most multinationals limit their entry level tests to 1st and 2nd Upper.KPMG,Accenture,McKinsey and Company,Deloitte,PricewaterHouseCoopers,Mobil,Shel l,Chevron,Total. Please give me a list as long as that to buttress your statement.

Well if you were employed as a presenter on MNET's Studio 53 or as Joan Rivers' sidekick on E! then the above might be true.
I don't see how a Well Site Geologist at Total or a Business Analyst at McKinsey would have to hit the party circuit to get their job done.Enlighten me please.

3/4? You are throwing figures around.A lot of us have learnt not to accept things the way they are put to us.Which poll was taken to arrive at that figure?Which population was sampled and where? Hard facts please.
It's only human to not want to fail, this primal instinct cannot be exclusive to 1st class graduates. It's time we gave the 1st class V 2.2/3.1(?) debate a rest. Those guys went through the same schools as we did,had the same 'tough lecturers',took lectures under mango trees yet they hit the bull's eye. That to me is resilience and enterprise. They invented ways to get great results while others whined about the system. They would continue to be innovative wherever they go.
Hint: Look up Ifueko Omogui-Okauru.

Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
@Bandersnatch aww how touching you had to mention someone who finished from my secondary skool how inspiring! I can categorically tell you that apart from the engineering courses or number crunching professions where you basically follow laid down procedures any organisation who expects you to reason and come up with solutions will not even consider a first class. A business analyst or an change management consultant at KPMG,Accenture,McKinsey and Company,Deloitte,PricewaterHouseCoopers would be more expected to hit a party and socialize well when the need arises. Or do you want to talk about investment bankers who are expected to be the life of a party to attract customers?? Or you want a HR person who would go by the book when ur particular case is peculiar and not refered to in any book??
The points are all there.
Final word from me on this issue is Show me an entrepreneur who finished with a first class? Just 1 in the world and I would succumb to whatever you say!

Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
The rock, i think u are right cos d man that screened us in lagos said and i quote 'after this stage which is appointment letter which i know they will take all of u, dont bring passports photos that looks like as if u are going for olympics'. He also said two or more siblings wont be employed, only one can be employed. Jst lets pray and hope for the best

I hrd 250 per batch A̶̲̥̅̊₪d̶̲̥̅̊ its 2 batch a year, during my assessment time I got †ђξ info frm one of †ђξ assessors.. So pray u fall into each batch.there is no possibility that they will take every body, some will be dropped.so if u performed well during ur assessment day, then you won't be affected.Dats wats up!!!
-
Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
something tells me virtually all of will be picked sha cos the assessment was for jst eighteen candidates per day in lagos. And assessment was nt done everyday... I think if many pple would be dropped. The cut off for d test would have been higher.

Be careful what you wish for cos you just might get it! Steve Ballmer graduated magna laude from Harvard, he is the CEO and
co-founder of Microsoft. His net worth is estimated at $15 billion. Bill Gates hit 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT! Mark Zuckerberg was at Harvard too, am sure you agree that you don't go to Harvard by being your high school class goat. Don't grab at straws please.
The truth is self evident,au revoir.
-
Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
Bill & Paul Allen co_ founded Microsoft.
-
Re: Union Bank Thread! Am truly sori 4 Deleting it!
@Bandersnatch nice try but Steve Ballmer was microsofts 30th employee and still serves at microsoft got an 8% share when they just started that does not make him an entrepreneur. Bill gates and Mark Zuckerberg both dropped out of Harvard didn't finish with a 1st class! Give me somefin concrete please!
