I also applied but have not got an invitation for the test yet. I really hope it'll still come. But from their previous tests, how workable is the gatecrashing option?

The test format is usually the GMAT format (by kaplan, barrons etc). If you applied before the deadline and you are a 2.1 and under 26yrs, they will call you sooner or later. As for if its worth it, well u can never tell till u try it, but I can assure you that you will work under immense pressure, you will learn a great deal.
