ACCA . Gives room for an Accountant to be contemporary with the current changes in our wider social_ Accounting system. unlike, OUR OLD SCHOOL ICAN, that is very rigid with its SAS.Thank GOD they have started incorporating IAS AND IFRS., into their syllabus.
Yea,go for the best ACCA.ICAN is becoming outdated
On my God I wonder why people should talk like this. Who told you ICAN is outdated? If Ican is outdated why would ACCA be romancing with ICAN for absorption. ICAN can never be outdated. You cant appreciate what you dont have. Im not saying you should not write ACCA bcos of its additional qualification but saying ICAN is outdated is what I write against. I have ICAN. I thank God. I know much about IFRS you were talking about. ICAN covers every areas of accounting standard while ACCA doesnt. After all, you cant compare ICAN questions with ACCA.
Its unfortunate when Nigerians go about talking carelessly about issues they no nothing about. Ican is a world class professional body that has produced some of the best Accountants in the world today. Every country is expected to have its own professional Accounting body and if because you are writing the exams of ACCA you now feel you can start rubbishing our great institute then something is wrong with you. It is your choice if you want to belong to ACCA but remember in as much as u still want to practice as an Accountant in Nigeria, u must belong to ICAN. And if i may ask you, whats the benefit for example of studying the British tax law as u guys do in ACCA when you no u want to practice in Nigeria?
IFRS is an international standard issued by IFAC and if you dont know, ICAN is a founding member of iFAC and so, a party to the issuance of those standards. Please for next time sake, get your facts right before coming to a public forum like this to expose your ignorance. So many people have sacrificed quite a lot to get ICAN to where it is now and we wont allow people like you to demean our great institute.
@ Op, ill just say this, both bodies are great institutions of repute. I'll just give us distinctive factors that sets ACCA above.
Recent developments even in Nigeria is dat financial/corporate reporting is now tending towards IFRS, wh forms the core syllabus covered by ACCA. And here's d main catch, upon completion of your ACCA, you can get d ICAN certification upon attending a Seminar, but an ICAN graduate would need to complete 5 examinations in the professional series of ACCA. In addition, ACCA gives u an added advantage by offering you a BSc. from Oxford Brookes University, UK.

seun and God father with all the respect , i think both of you are flustered.ACCA and ican are not mates. we can never be in the same shoes. we think outside the box , unlike ur so called ican that encourage its members to cram its pack. no wonder interpretation is a constraints to icans holders.what do you know about IFRS. No disrespect to icans holders ,our GAAP which is ican should complement IFRS. What i am striving to point out is that the ican syllabus should be review.
With British tax system is very complex and dynamic , it changes with the Eco/ socio system. With the British TAX i can deal with the Nigeria tax system, that is not contemporary and is never review. Are u saying i can not calculate CGT FOR COMPANY AND FOR INDIVIDUAL.
Both Institutions are great. But if you have ICAN and set in for ACCA is a duplication of effort. I was writing ACCA together with ICAN before i became an ICAN member but after qualification i just sat down one day and said to myself this is duplication of effort. I dont see myself travelling to practise in UK so why should i write ACCA. But if there is need to travel then i might take the exam when i get there. In Nigeria if u have ACCA or ACA you are rated equally and mind you guys performance on the Job is not by the qualifications you guys are carrying it is what value you can add to the Company you are working at. If you have the qualification and your turnaround time is low you will be sacked irrespective of your certificate. In one word ACA and ACCA rank in pari passu here in Nigeria. ICAN is also internationally recognised cos is a member of IFAC.
@ Jalox004: U suck alot. It even shows what kind of professionals ACCA is producing. I guess you are new to the professional world because no professional will ever condemn a professional colleague openly. The Tax Law in Nigeria is clearly different from the one in England please be guided. Why do you think ICAN will organise a seminar for ACCA Holders its just for them to familiarise them with the local happenings and structure in Nigeria especially in Tax law. Even when there is a conflict between our own SAS and IAS: SAS prevail in Nigeria. You are in Nigeria and ICAN rules here if you are in UK then you can carry the certificate and scream anywhere you like. But to address you both Institutions are great Institutions. If you want to practice tax here just study our tax law so that you dont misguide you clients. ICAN has produced great Accountant and still producing more.
i think the the topic is just a personal view.i see no reason why some people should take it personal.
we all know that there is no basis for comparism between ACCA and ICAN. ACCA is far better than ICAN in so many aspect
if you have any view to the contrary, u table it maturely, rether than behaving childishly.
For all i know, we have two accounting professional bodies in this country, ICAN and others. Please if you can't pass ICAN stop talking what you don't know. ICAN is and will always be a world class professional body.
"Both Institutions are great" as said ealier by dapato. I am an Associate member of both Institute and apart from that i lectured at both ACCA levels and ICAN levels. The point is a matter of choice and proper counselling, as a matter of fact Nigerian ACCA's holders find it very difficult to practice with their certificates here in Nigeria and over there in the UK. There is no way you can practice in Nigeria as an ACCA holder without completing your direct membership programme with ICAN, and over there in UK they prefer to take their British counterpart as a trainee than Nigerian. On the issue of recorgnition, both were globally recorgnised. Like we have ICAN in Nigeria there is also ICAEW in the UK which also give direct membership to ICAN members on completion of certain programs. In addittion, ACCA also has different syllabus for their papers depending on your region for example you cannot use ACCA UK certificate to practice in South Africa without going through the ACCA South Africa membership programme. Anyone you choose to focus on is as good as the other, just try and identify the purpose of chosen the profession in order not to walk the journey of 1year in 5 years.

Maybe i should be the judge. As an accounting graduate yet to write ican or acca, i stand at a vantage point. Previously at school, there has always been this rhapsody about ican until certain people started taking to acca. From my inference, the rush for acca is in tandem with the rush to live and work abroad. But ask your selves how many foreigners have come to write ican in other to practice in Nigeria. Ican is for nigeria while acca is uk's identity. You Nigerians spending all that cash for acca while in Nigeria should reconsider because charity begins at home. As a Nigerian living and willing or it is most likely you must practice in Nigeria, you have no business with acca. Like someone said, they wont take you as a trainee, only their fellow brit. All acca ambassadors here are unpatriotic, would-be prodigal accountants. You most likely took London GCE then.
Dear all, i greet you. Let me start by saying that there is a big difference btw ACCA and ICAN. while i can confirm to you that ICAN is the most recognised accounting body in Nigeria only, ACCA has recognitions in many countries across the world.
I started with ICAN but after reviewing ACCA curriculum,i quit ICAN and enrolled for ACCA because i felt i was missing out on some current developments as far as accounting is concerned e.g IFRS.
I thank God that i qualified about 2 years ago and believe me,there has been no regret whatsoever. God is my witness that i have received a couple of calls from international recruitment agencies asking me to send my CV with some of them even going as far as conduting telephone interviews for me and the likes.
Although,i am currently still working in Nigeria but i can confirm to you that with a globally recognised certificate,the sky is your limit (if you are smart)!
I am a Nigerian and very proud to be but i believe ICAN has a lot to do.I only had one level to go in ICAN before opting out despite the fact that many people advised me from doing so. I can also confirm to you that a lot of guys with ICAN have also written ACCA and some of them are still writing.
Globalization is the order of the day folks so why do you want to restrict your potentials to a particular vicinity?If ICAN was serious,by now it should have been the most recognized accounting body in Africa or west africa but it is not.I am not condemning our own thing but the ''ogas'' at the top are more interested in making money rather than building the name of ICAN.
Before now,if you failed one ICAN paper and passed some in a particular stage,you would be expected to write all the papers again.WHY???ACCA has always been flexible from day 1, you can also bag a BSc degree in Applied Accounting for those that are not lucky with JAMB and the certificate is globally recognized. They just make life easy for you but that is never to say that the questions are cheap, never!
The issue with us in Nigeria is that we are highly sentimental in nature,sometimes we indulge in unconstructive arguements all in the name of protecting our own thing rather than addressing the issues at stake. There was a time one of the Nigerian film producers said on the TV that Nollywood is in the same league with Hollywood.isn't that ridiculous? ???Do you need to google or do any research before you know that the guy was talking trash?
Please note that i am not discouraging anybody from writing ICAN but am only saying what i know (which are based on facts).Ask yourself this question:How many of Dafinone's children wrote ICAN?As far as accounting is concerned in Nigeria, Dafinone is an icon. All his children either wrote ICAEW or ACCA.why didn't he ask them to go for ICAN because it is a Nigerian thing? Also note that all his children are chartered accountants and that was why he given an award for promoting Accounting.
Nigeria is blessed with many people with great potentials and that is why you see us passing exams like CISA,CFA,FRM,PRM etc with ease. With these qualifications,some of our brothers and sisters are top shots in multinational companies like google,JP morgan,world bank,IMF etc.
Finally,i feel it's all about choice and what each and every one of us wants in life.If you are not keen about being a global player,pls don't waste your money and time,just go for ICAN otherwise it must be ACCA,CPA or ICAEW.

I think ICAN and ACCA are professional bodies of equal status when viewed from the global perspective though ACCA is known worldwide than ICAN not because it is better than ICAN but because of it long existence which is as a result of where it originated from. can you compare the existence of UNITED KINGDOM with the existence of NIGERIA, thus, this makes the difference between the two bodies....

From the view point of the poster with the longest comment on this issue he believes ACCA is better because he wrote ICAN opted out for ACCA for reason he will not like to disclose to the public and believes that people writing ICAN are short sighted that weren’t looking into the future
On update please check the current syllabus on 2009 to know how updated it is in terms IFRS, IAS, IPSAC etc before you make public comment of this nature
I stand on the point that ACCA is better only if you are a UK citizen residing and you have all it take to move to the UK at anytime but if you are an hustler like me and reside in Nigeria it is better you opt for ICAN. what if you think you will find yourself in UK but find yourself in UNITED STATE where they have their own ACCOUNTING PROFESSIONAL BODY. Think of it and make a wise decision

@solokiri...my brother,let me reiterate that i am not undermining ICAN but i stand to be corrected that ICAN and ACCA are not in the same league.
While i am not trying to promote ACCA,am just trying to be as objective and realisitc as possible based on verifiable facts.You said i didn't disclose my reason for deflecting to ACCA,answer...i felt ACCA had more to offer.I still have my 2004 PE1 passed result at home so don't think i left ICAN because i failed. No! Besides,who said ACCA exams are cheaper than ICAN?
Please think about what i said earlier on, how come none of Dafinone's children did ICAN and yet they are practicing in nigeria? this is something that is easily verifiable so there is no need to doubt me.
Let us deviate a little,do you know the most recognised RISK MGT certification in CBN? It is called FRM (Financial Risk Manager). It's not as if we don't have local risk mgt institutes in Nigeria but people at the top (Sanusi,Dafinone etc) know better and prefer to go for what counts most.
I actually have a lot to say but i don't think it's worth the stress but for the initiator,whatever you choose at the end of the day, you will definitely be who God wants you to be in life because it's not of him that willeth nor runneth (with all your qualifications) but of God that showeth mercy.

@yes i can, I believe you need to have some time to really conduct investigation in order to be well informed. Those people you refer to have enough resources to reside in the UK. How many Nigerians do you think will be opportuned to travel ot of Nigeria? Even those that are in UK have problem of being employed as a result of racial discrimination. @ solonike has said it all. If you think you end up be in UK but you find your self in USA, SA or Wales, then you will need to undergo the stress again.

I have ACCA and ICAN so nobody can tell me ACCA is better than ICAN except the person have not worked in the best four practising firms
ICAN is great remember ICAN lower their standard bcos Nigerians like cheap success & shortcuts otherwise to me ACCA is over flexible and not really fit in to our environment. in the UK their citizens were no longer kin with much reading that was why ACCA started credit system to accommodate their citizens
Think of this CFA is now adopting the same fail one fail all that Nigerians were complaining bitterly about ICAN.and today Nigerians are all running to become a CFA holder.
Please lets stop deceiving ourselves ICAN is the ultimate in Nigeria for ACCA people should cross the bridge when they reach there.

guyz what do u expect, Ican was established by an Act of parliament no 15 of nigeria in 1965 so its a nigerian thing, i dont see any basis for comparing it with Acca which is a foreign thing, u talk of acca when u intend to pursue a career abroad, but as far as naija is concerned we all know that Ican is the undisputed most recorgnised accounting professional body regardless of current developments, i stand to be corrected.
When you say Iternational, you are not saying National.
In every aspect of Business, there is an aspect of Culture/Tradition.
The point is: ACA understands our system better. ACCA is nice too because of its added advantage. But still they both play equally. Also I've come to realize that most of those who like bringing up this debate are non business/accounting graduates. They are mostly Mathematicians, Statisticians and so on. They just dont want to be seen differently. Hence they view 1 better.

I understand the current Accountant General of the Federation is a
Fellow of ICAN and i don't think he has any re grates at all for being a holder of ICAN. He has actually reached the peak of his career.
