The Federal University of Technology, Akure, was established in August 1981 to give prominence to training in technology and applied saence, and to assist in ensuring rapid technological and industrial development of Nigeria. It formally took off on 311 November, 1982.

The motto of the University is, “Technology for Self-Reliance”. In choosing its motto, the University is laying emphasis on the objective of the University to contribute to national development and self-reliance through the advancement of science and technology.
